Summer Homecoming
3 September 2008
As the season here in the UK comes to an end, I cannot help but become excited about the prospect of returning home. Where summer is summer and not just a word for the season we are in.The last county season has been a wonderful experience, where I have learnt a lot and seen so many good county cricketers applying their trade, day in and day out. Experience is certainly not one of the things that the English Cricket Board (ECB) struggle with. Just yesterday Graeme Hick announced his retirement from first class cricket and his record will stand as one of the best! 526 first class games with 41 112 runs at an average of 52. His class might not have been truly felt at Test level, but I can assure everyone that the impact that he had on the county game and the experience he showed has helped many a player in the county system develop.
It certainly gives us back home some food for thought as to when we see players as being too old. Having good, experienced, franchise cricketers in our system is fundamental in ensuring that the next generation of international cricketers are ready to represent SA with only success on their minds.
Personally the season here in the UK has been a disappointing one. I have struggled on the slower wickets that tend to do more through the air and off the deck than back home. The lessons have been learnt.
I have wondered many times in my daily prayer time, why this season had to be so tough. I asked God to help me to persevere. I realised that God does not give perseverance, but gives the circumstances in which perseverance can be learnt.
Makes you think doesn’t it!

21 July 2008
South Africa started the test match series against England with a draw. A draw that I believe has left SA with the momentum going into the second test at Leeds. Why? After 3 days SA was well and truly out of the game with England the only team that could…
