SACA’s POSITION ON THE SUGGESTED MOVE TO TWELVE PROFESSIONAL PROVINCIAL TEAMS

There are strong rumours that professional cricket will increase in size from the current six (6) Franchise Teams to twelve (12) professional Provincial Teams.
At this stage these are simply rumours and CSA has assured SACA that no decisions have yet been made.  CSA is aware that it must engage SACA on this before any decisions are made.
SACA’s position at this stage is as follows:
  • SACA is generally in favour of increased playing opportunities for players.
  • SACA is however not in favour of anything which may affect the long term sustainability of professional cricket or which may detrimentally affect (either financially or in cricket terms) its members who are the current professional cricketers.
  • A change in the size of professional cricket could potentially affect the situation of the existing professional cricketers (financially and in other ways).  SACA will protect the rights of its members.
  • SACA believes that any change in the size of professional cricket should be thoroughly researched to determine the impact of this before any decisions are made.  This includes research into all of the cricket, financial and logistical factors.
  • SACA will not make any decisions regarding any proposed changes without carefully considering all of the research and other relevant factors.
  • All further enquiries should be taken up with Tony Irish or JP Van Wyk at SACA.
